As part of its commitments to user data protection, Google Play is implementing significant changes to its account deletion policy for applications. This update aims to enhance the transparency and control users have over their data. In this article, we will discuss the key aspects of the new requirements, including obligations for developers, tools available in the Play Console, and consequences for applications that do not comply with the new regulations.

New Account Deletion Requirements

Comprehensive Questions About Data Deletion: Every developer whose application allows account creation must now answer detailed questions regarding data deletion. These questions have been added to the “Data Security” form in the Play Console.

In-App Account Deletion Path: Applications that allow users to create accounts must now include an in-app feature that enables them to easily and intuitively delete their account along with associated data.

External Link for Account Deletion: In addition to the internal path, developers must provide a link to an external website through which users can also initiate the process of deleting their account and data.

Implementation Timeline:

  • April 2023: Announcement of new requirements and addition of new questions in the Data Security form. Developers are encouraged to fill out the form early to avoid future publication issues.
  • December 7, 2023: Deadline for completing the form. From this point forward, incomplete responses will prevent the publication of new applications or updates to existing ones.
  • May 2024: Option to apply for an extension to meet the requirements until May 31, 2024.
  • Beginning of 2024: Users will start seeing changes in the Google Play Store, including new badges and links for data deletion.

Consequences for Non-Compliant Applications:

After the deadline, applications that do not meet the new requirements may face various forms of intervention from Google, including potential removal from Google Play. Therefore, it is crucial for developers to adapt to the new rules as soon as possible.

The new Google Play requirements regarding account deletion aim to enhance user privacy protection and give them greater control over their personal data. Developers must now not only offer paths for account deletion in their applications but also facilitate users’ access to information about how their data is processed and how they can delete it. Complying with these requirements is not just an obligation but also a step towards building trust and loyalty among users.
